BAS or BMS: what is the difference?
By Bassirou Thiam, building automation engineer · Updated
BAS (building automation system) and BMS (building management system) usually mean the same thing: the network of controllers and software that runs a building's HVAC and related systems. BAS is the common term in the United States, BMS in the United Kingdom and many other countries. EMS often refers to energy-focused systems.
In specs
US specs mostly say BAS or building automation and control; some owners write BMS. The documents asked for are the same: riser, points list, sequences.
