What is a BAS network riser diagram?

By Bassirou Thiam, building automation engineer · Updated

A network riser diagram is the BAS drawing that shows every controller, router, switch and network on a job, floor by floor, and how they connect. Each panel is labeled with its network address and BACnet device instance. Controls contractors often call it the network diagram; specs usually say riser.

Why it matters

It is a required item of the controls submittal and the first drawing a technician opens to find a device on site. If it does not match the points list or the installation, checkout and service both slow down.

What it shows

  • the BACnet/IP backbone and each MS/TP trunk;
  • every controller, router, switch and repeater;
  • floor penetrations and panel locations;
  • network addresses and device instances.
