Can ChatGPT or Claude make a BAS points list?

By Bassirou Thiam, building automation engineer · Updated

A chatbot like ChatGPT or Claude can draft a generic points list or explain a sequence in seconds. It does not know your job, does not draw a riser, and can state wrong values with confidence, so every line must be checked. Structio builds the riser and points list from your project and keeps them consistent.

What chatbots do well

  • explain a term, a protocol or a standard;
  • draft a first version of a sequence or a typical points list for a common unit;
  • reformat a table or rename points in bulk.

Where they fall short

  • No project memory. The list is generic; it does not know the floors, the panels or the controllers of this job.
  • Plausible but wrong. Language models can produce confident statements that are false, as their makers acknowledge. On a submittal, a wrong point or address costs a rejection or a site visit.
  • No drawing. A riser is a drawing tied to the points list; a chat answer is text.
  • Nothing stays in sync. When the job changes, you ask again and compare by hand.

When to choose a chatbot

For learning, explaining, or a first draft you will check line by line, a chatbot is fast and cheap. Use it alongside your tools, not as the source of the submittal.

When to choose Structio

Structio is built for one job: you describe the building once (floors, rooms, equipment, controllers) and it draws the network diagram and builds the points list from that same project, kept in sync when the job changes. Any controller brand, unlimited users, a 7-day free trial.
