What are BACnet object types (AI, AO, BI, BO, AV, BV)?
By Bassirou Thiam, building automation engineer · Updated
BACnet represents each point as an object. Analog Input (AI) and Binary Input (BI) are read from sensors and contacts, Analog Output (AO) and Binary Output (BO) drive actuators and relays, and Analog, Binary and Multi-state Values (AV, BV, MSV) are software points such as setpoints and modes.
Typical uses
| Object | Typical use |
|---|---|
| AI | Temperature, pressure, humidity sensor |
| AO | Valve or damper actuator, VFD speed |
| BI | Fan status, filter or freeze alarm |
| BO | Fan or pump start/stop |
| AV / BV / MSV | Setpoint, enable, occupancy mode |
